Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps, and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.
Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.
In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.
Oh Ethan and Lena…how I love you guys!! Even though your relationship goes against everything in your worlds, you do everything to stay together. *swoons*
OK, back to Earth. But WOW. This book was absolutely fantastic. I was literally teleported into Gatlin and could feel, see, and sense everything the author described. I love when I can actually picture the scenery and feel like a part of the world I am reading about, and this book certainly delivered.
The book is written from Ethan’s point of view, which I loved. How often do you hear from the male’s POV? Not very, which is why this book was so intriguing to me. It was great to have him describe his emotions and feelings as opposed to the female always doing so. And, he was believable and not over-the-top – two thumbs up!
The entire plot of the book was so captivating. The Caster world is scary, intriguing, fun, and a whole mixture of other things that make it the crazy world that it is. Every Caster has a different power, and they can be either Light or Dark – making for some very, shall we say, interesting characters?
The relationship between Ethan and Lena was my favorite part of the book. You could feel the pain, love, and raw emotion that they both experience, which made for a constant roller coaster of emotions. I really liked the “special” way they are able to communicate with each other and thought that it added an extra twist to the story.
I am so happy that I have a copy of Beautiful Darkness just waiting for me to dive into. I’m not sure I would have the patience to wait for the next book – I have to know what happens! This is definitely a must-read if you’re looking for paranormal romance with a Southern twist.

  1. I must be crazy because I could not get in to this book. I ended up putting it down. I keep reading fantastic reviews about it, but for whatever reason I just couldn’t relate? devour? enjoy? Makes me sad because this book screams everything I love about YA paranormal romances.

  2. Right–my fave part is that it’s Ethan’s POV. Very refreshing! I read this so long ago that I’m going to have to go stalk down a recap somewhere before I dive into Beautiful Darkness! Glad you enjoyed!

  3. I’m glad you enjoyed this so much! I wasn’t as overwhelmed by its awesomeness, but I definitely enjoyed it…great review! :)

  4. I’m glad to read you loved this novel. It’s in my TBR pile. Like you, I’m interested in reading in Ethan’s perspective. Thanks for the awesome review!

  5. I was really struck by the wonderful sensory detail in Gatlin, too. I’m from Bama, so it’s not quite the South that I know, but it still feels like the setting is a real place with true-to-life inhabitants.
