Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases you are eagerly anticipating.

Title: Awaken
Author: Katie Kacvinsky
Published by: Houghton Mifflin Books for Children
Release Date: May 23rd 2011

From Goodreads:
In the year 2060, everything is done digitally. Kids no longer go to schools. They stay home and take classes online. Adults work from home, too. Even dating is no longer done in person. Why walk on a real beach when you can stroll down a digitally remastered one instead? No bad weather, no seagulls, nothing real to ruin a perfectly fine time.

Though she’s grown up in this digital world, something about being cut off from everyone doesn’t sit right with seventeen-year-old Madeline. Her favorite activity–the only one she does off line–is soccer. She likes the physicality of it and the comradery with the other girls.

Then she meets Justin. He, too, prefers life off line. It’s all he talks about. He even takes her out to a real coffee shop and an underground club. Maybe it’s his attentiveness, or the physical closeness of actually being with someone, or just that he’s very good looking, Madie is definitely drawn to him. But there’s also something very aloof about him, like perhaps he’s hiding something.

When Madie uncovers the truth, she’s faced with the question: What’s more important, fighting for what you believe in or love?

How good does this book sound?! What a great idea for a story – perhaps maybe not even that far-fetched?

  1. I just saw this book somewhere else a couple of weeks ago and I keep thinking about how awesome I’m hoping this book is going to be. Such a great idea, and your right, maybe not that far fetched.

  2. I love the cover, it’s a bit different than what’s out there right now. And, yes the premise doesn’t sound that far fetched at all…it sounds like it could happen, that part of the story reminds me a little of Feed by MT Anderson.

  3. I have this book added to my TBR list for 2011. It looks really, really good! Awesome choice.

  4. Reminds me of FEED too! Will def. read!

    Thx!

    My WoW!

  5. And now you have it! Score!

  6. It’s pretty scary to think about! *shudders* I would not want to be stuck inside all day living my life from a computer. How would you kiss someone? Screen-to-screen? No thank you! I do like the idea for a BOOK though and not real LIFE, so I am excited to read this one and see what kind of world has been created.

    Great pick!

  7. This sound like one of those books that may very well come true one day, and I love reading about the future now. Great choice!

  8. i dont know why but i always feel like the cover shows a jar with a scary bug in it… yeah. oh well, i still real;ly like the cover. great pick this week :)

  9. I just saw this on another blog…what a lovely cover, and an incredible sounding story.
