Title: This Lullaby
Author: Sarah Dessen
Publication Date: May 27, 2002
When it comes to relationships, Remy doesn’t mess around. After all, she’s learned all there is to know from her mother, who’s currently working on husband number five. But there’s something about Dexter that seems to defy all of Remy’s rules. He certainly doesn’t seem like Mr. Right. For some reason, however, Remy just can’t seem to shake him. Could it be that Remy’s starting to understand what those love songs are all about?
DEXTER!! DEXTER!! DEXTER!! DEXTER!! DEXTER!!
Okay, now that that’s out of my system, let’s move on with our regularly scheduled review. But seriously, Dexter is now one of my fave male characters. He’s not your typical swoonworthy literary boy – he’s gangly, uncoordinated, messy, and a wanderer. It’s his PERSONALITY and his REALNESS that I absolutely loved about him. And the way he treated Remy even though she was a complete you-know-what was impressive.
Speaking of Remy – I fell in love with her no-nonsense attitude and overall toughness towards life. Although a bit cynical with a negative view of love, I still enjoyed how she tried to constitute her behavior and why it was for the best. In enters Dexter to mess it all up, and the fantastic story begins!
As much as I loved the main characters, the secondary characters really stood out to me as well. I especially enjoyed Remy’s mom and brother and Dexter’s bandmates. I can’t help but be drawn to people who are so completely different from myself (Dexter’s bandmates) or someone who after multiple marriages still somehow believes in love (Remy’s mom).
Sarah Dessen never fails to impress me! Her books are simply amazing and such a joy to read. This Lullaby is no exception and would be an awesome beach read this summer.
PS – If you don’t follow Sarah Dessen on Twitter, you seriously need to do it NOW. I laugh out loud every single day at her tweets!
