From Goodreads:
Beatrice “Tris” Prior has reached the fateful age of sixteen, the stage at which teenagers in Veronica Roth’s dystopian Chicago must select which of five factions to join for life. Each faction represents a virtue: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. To the surprise of herself and her selfless Abnegation family, she chooses Dauntless, the path of courage. Her choice exposes her to the demanding, violent initiation rites of this group, but it also threatens to expose a personal secret that could place in mortal danger. Veronica Roth’s young adult Divergent trilogy launches with a captivating adventure about love and loyalty playing out under most extreme circumstances.

Divergent has definitely earned a spot in my all-time fave dystopians. I’m still in awe that this is Veronica Roth’s debut novel because it is SUPERB!
I have mentioned this before, but I am a complete sucker when a book is set where I live. It makes the settings and the world so much more alive to me. I still think about this book every time I go by the Hancock or Navy Pier…but I am still not brave/suicidal enough to jump out of a running L train J
I love the idea of the factions and how you have to fit into one perfectly – there is no overlapping or blurring of the lines. You are “this” person until you are old enough to choose and then you are whatever you choose for the rest of your life with no way out. This is why I love dystopian – it’s so hard to imagine but at the same time, not really that hard at all. Veronica Roth did such an awesome job of building this world and making the reader really feel what the characters are going through.
And I cannot write a review of Divergent without mentioning my favorite character. FOUR. Oh Four, how I love you to death. You’re such a badass and so mysterious and I want to know everything I can about you.
Any book that can make me furiously turn the pages as fast as I did is a true home run in my opinion. I loved Divergent and am so pumped for the second book in the series, Insurgent, coming out in May 2012.

  1. I’m not even kidding, I think about this book EVERY time the El whizzes by and is about to stop. But, hey, maybe we COULD be Dauntless after how hard we rocked the trapeze! DAREDEVILS!

  2. I really need to get this book! I’ve been dying to read it for a while now and still don’t have it. Great review! You’re making me crave having it even more than before.

  3. I just finished this book this week. The only thing that I’m sad about is that the other books aren’t coming out for way too long. Too long for my liking, anyhow.

  4. I still haven’t gotten to this one yet:( It’s taunting me on the shelf begging me to read it but work has been crazy and I haven’t had a chance to meet Four! I need to meet him! Thanks again for sending this one to me, super excited to read it!

  5. I love dystopians and I’ve been dying to get my hands on this one. My library’s a little slow on the uptake and my TBR pile is forever growing so needless to say I simply haven’t gotten around to it yet.
Glad to know another person thinks it was fantastic though :]
