This is a rambly, geeky post about how much I am in love with this show. ABC Family delivered with Pretty Little Liars in a big way, so when I saw Switched at Birth advertised every five seconds, I figured I’d give it a shot. And I became HOOKED. Beyond hooked. Perhaps a bit obsessed? Either way, I am so thrilled that pop culture is embracing the deaf community and really shedding light on the issues and road blocks that deaf and hearing impaired people face every day.
In case you haven’t seen the show, here are some clips
I first became interested in sign language watching the last season of Celebrity Apprentice with Marlee Matlin. She was such a sweet, strong, awesome contestant and I became fascinated with sign language because of her. When I saw that she was going to be in Switched at Birth, that was just the icing on the cake.
So now after 10 episodes of fan girling and having an insane amount of conversations about Emmett, Anna and I have signed up to take a six-week ASL course. While being able to sign fluently is wayyyy down the line, I’m so excited to start the class and begin to learn the basics of the language. Maybe if I get really good I’ll attempt a vlog in sign language with subtitles…
I seriously don’t know how I’m going to wait until January for the next 22 episodes, but in the meantime I will keep my love alive by watching the first 10 episodes on Netflix Instant! If you haven’t watched the show yet, I highly, HIGHLY recommend. And then you can let me know and we can fangirl and discuss
