From Goodreads:
In the violent country of Ludania, the language you speak determines what class you are, and there are harsh punishments if you forget your place—looking a member of a higher class in the eye can result in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina (Charlie for short) can understand all languages, a dangerous ability she’s been hiding her whole life. Her only place of release is the drug-filled underground club scene, where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. There, she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy who speaks a language she’s never heard, and her secret is almost exposed. Through a series of violent upheavals, it becomes clear that Charlie herself is the key to forcing out the oppressive power structure of her kingdom…

It took two computers, a good five hours total, and some mild cussing to download this book from GalleyGrab because of a Lion/ADE issue, but it was ALL WORTH IT. (special thanks to Anna for letting me use her computer!)

I read The Pledge during the readathon and I’m so glad I read most of the book in one sitting. Once you start, you really can’t put it down. The suspense was killer and the twists and turns the plot took were so unpredictable and exciting. I loved all of the characters and they each brought something unique and interesting to the overall story.

I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to spoil anything, but take my word for it when I say you should read this book STAT. You will not be disappointed ☺

  4. Hah! I've downloaded this one too, after days of trying to figure out why it wasn't working. It was partly operator error, but I ended up using Firefox instead of chrome and got it! Looks like a good one. I'm looking forward to it.

  10. Oooh! I've seen this cover float around but honestly I don't recall that I've actually ever read the synopsis. Oopsies. But after all that work (and mild cussing) you went through to get it to work and you loving it! That's awesome!

Your checklist looks like a lot of the requirements I look for in an awesome book! ;)

  11. I'm definitely interested in picking this one up. I love the idea of language itself being a plot point--I can't recall any other novels using a translator as a lynchpin.

Thanks for the review and rec!

    Smiles!
    Lori
